RTW: Reincarnation ?

This week’s topic:

If you could be reincarnated as any fictional character, which would it be?

Yeesh, where to start? There are so many fictional characters I love. Sadly, my taste in fiction is rather dark and there are many characters I’m exceedingly grateful NOT to be (Harry Goldfarb, Damon Salvatore, Eric Draven, Jon Snow). Still, here are my top three reincarnation characters.

1) Morpheus, Dream, The Sandman from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman graphic novel series

Firstly, he’s the King of Dreams! He lives in the Dreaming, and can walk through the various plains of existence, through time itself, chatting up the myriad creatures from mythology. He’s styled after Robert Smith, so if nothing else, I’d come back from the dead with awesome hair. I’d also be incredibly tall and skinny with razor-blade cheekbones. I’d look spectacular in a black trench-coat that billowed in the wind and I’d have six wicked siblings: Destiny, Death, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium.

What really blows my mind about this character is his awesome (in the original dictionary definition sense of the word) power, the ability to manipulate people/gods/angels/demons and everything in between through dreams. He has to be one of the most magnificent and terrifying characters in comic book history.

2) Ghost from Poppy Z Brite’s Lost Souls

Ghost is one of the gentlest, loveliest souls I’ve ever encountered in literature. He’s a strange boy with a family history of dabbling in the arcane. He plays in a band (he’s a musician!) with his best friend, Steve. He’d do anything for Steve, no self-sacrifice is too much even when it puts his life on the line. He also rides a kid’s bike with multi-coloured streamers. He’s so innocent and yet so aware of the darkness and brutality of the world around him. If I can’t have a friend like Ghost, then I’d gladly be him.

3) Sean Kendrick from The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvatar

The boy and his horse. Sean’s story isn’t too pleasant in the beginning, but because of the way it ends I would love to be that boy. He’s gentle, kind, honourable and has iron-clad integrity. He’s not afraid to stna dup to bullys and to stand up for what’s right in the face of persecution. He’s also a wizard with horses – flesh-eating, human-killing, death-dealing water horses I might add – and just takes everything in his stride, enjoying life despite his frugal existence. He’s also got a foot in the ocean, part water creature with arcane (love this word) powers, and he has a great girl rooting for him. Did I mention he has the adoration of one of the wildest, most exquisite and savage water horses? Yup, I’d love to be Sean Kendrick, galloping along the beach on the back of my carnivorous water horse.

Sadly, there were no awesome artist’s renditions of Sean, so here’s a crop from the book cover.

So those are three fictional characters I’d like to be reincarnated as. Erm… clearly I’m going to be a boy in my next life.

Which fictional character would you like to be?
