TGIF: Unexpected Reads

Something super duper incredibly exciting happened to me this week and all I want to do is talk about it but I’m going to wait until everything is 100% official before blabbing the good news so until then, here’s a TGIF post…

This Friday’s Question:

Unexpected Books: Which books did you have reservations about reading, but ended up loving once you did?

I’m always a little skeptical of books written by celebrities. I’m a huge fan of Torchwood and a fan of John Barrowman’s in general but I started reading this book with mixed feelings, hoping it wouldn’t disappoint. It was awesome! Yes, it’s MG and it’s still awesome. Even though I prefer darker, twisted stories, the originality of this fantasy epic just blew me away and the writing was brilliant. I’ll definitely be reading the next books in this series.

Being a huge fan of Dexter and Criminal Minds, I have very high expectations of stories that deal with psychopathy and serial killers. Being YA, I thought this book would feel watered down, censored even and I was sorely mistaken. This book is brutal, bloody and unforgiving. The descriptions are graphic and the protagonist is seriously dark. I loved this book and cannot wait to read the sequel due for release this year! Be warned though, this book is not for the squeamish.

I’d read mixed reviews about this book and I’m not usually a fan of this violent, gang-ridden type of literature but because Taylor Kitsch (I love Timmy Riggins) was starring in the film version, I just had to give this a shot. I’m so glad I did. The omniscient narrator is a character unto itself although it never physically appears in the story and this makes for a quirky and complex read. Again, not for sensitive readers as this very much adult book contains strong language, graphic sex, uninhibited drug use and has a seriously bad attitude.
What books have you read that pleasantly surprised you?
