– Best “I Want To Go To There” Setting in a Book

Thisby Island from Maggie Stiefvater’s The Scorpio Races. Granted there are flesh eating water horses stalking the beaches ready to tear you into little pieces but there are also amazing cliffs, wild waves and ancient magic stirring through the earth. Despite or perhaps because of the magical danger the water horses (carnivorous kelpies really) represent, I want to visit this island. I’d love even more to snag a water horse for myself and take part in the scorpio races. Crazy, maybe. Exhilarating? Absolutely!

– Favorite YA Characters

My favourite YA characters of all time are:

5. Karou from Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – because she’s awesome, is an artist, has blue hair and lives in Prague when not traveling the world on the power of wishes.

4. Lyra from The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman – because she’s a kickass younger heroine and when I read the book as a kid, I wanted to be her just so I could have a form-changing daimon at my side

3. Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith – because he’s the quintessential bad boy, the tormented dark soul misunderstood by the world when he really just needs a hugs…or six, by me, especially when played by the delightful Ian Somerhalder. (See that smirk??)

2. Sean Kendrick from The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater – because he’s gentle with horses and sensitive to the natural world. He’s also a bit odd and away with the fairies which I just find so endearing.

And now for my number one favourite YA character…

1. Ghost from Lost Souls by Poppy Z Brite – this character just mesmerised me. He’s sweet, sensitive, androgynous, selfless, gentle and yet has a loyalty and love for his friends that knows no bounds, for friends he would die fighting to protect. He’s also got a bit of a southern weird juju thing about him which makes him even more enthralling and mysterious.
